Short answer: For a main drainage line carrying a lot of water, look at the U-Ditch, which offers the widest choice of widths, from 10 to 360 cm. For surface water on roads that vehicles cross, look at the Spoon Drain V. For a smooth road surface with no covers and heavy vehicles passing over, look at the O-Gutter. The actual size and load class should be set by the project designer from the water volume and vehicle loads.

Start from where the channel will go

The quickest way is to ask "where will the channel be, and what will pass over it?" and then choose the type.

AreaUsual channelWhy
Industrial estate roads, main drainage lineLarge U-DitchHigh capacity; special sizes can be made to the project design
Around factories and warehousesU-Ditch + cover, or Spoon Drain along the roadChoose the cover for pedestrian or vehicle areas
Road crossings, car parks, petrol stationsO-GutterContinuous smooth surface, no covers to come loose or rock

U-Ditch: widths from 10 to 360 cm

  • The widest range of widths of the three precast channel types, from small channels around buildings to the main drainage lines of industrial estates
  • Sizes with drawings (200 cm long):
    • With shoulder, single reinforcement: 25×30 to 80×80 cm
    • With shoulder, double reinforcement: 25×30 to 100×100 cm
    • Without shoulder, single / one-and-a-half layer: 25×30 to 120×120 cm
    • Without shoulder, double reinforcement: 25×30 to 150×150 cm
    • With shoulder and steel angle edge, and with 30 cm protruding dowels
  • Special sizes made before: for example 145×175×200 and 170×175×200 cm to the Amata City Industrial Estate standard
  • An open channel is easy to maintain: sunlight and air reach the water, so it does not turn foul as easily as in a closed pipe
  • Steel angle edge: used where steel covers sit, to stop the concrete edge wearing from the cover

Matching covers: concrete (economical), painted anti-rust steel, or hot-dip galvanised steel, rated 2 tonnes (footpath) or 20 tonnes (vehicles). Where the size or direction changes or several lines meet, use the catch basin made for U-Ditch.

Spoon Drain V: a shallow channel vehicles can cross

  • A slightly concave, shallow section that carries surface water while vehicles drive over it
  • No covers, so no lost or rocking covers
  • 5 sizes (width × thickness × length, cm): 30×8×100, 40×10×100, 50×15×100, 50×20×100 and 50×25×100
  • 1 m per piece, laid end to end

O-Gutter: closed channel, smooth surface, heavy vehicles can pass

  • Inlet and drain pipe in one piece; only a narrow slot shows at the road surface
  • Suited to road crossings, car parks and areas where you do not want channel covers
  • Sizes Ø 15 to 100 cm, 2 m long
  • Load classes: Ø 15 cm comes in walkway and 10-tonne versions; Ø 30–100 cm come in 10-tonne and 52-tonne versions
  • A Curve Stone version is available for gutters next to kerbs or road edges

FAQ

How wide are U-Ditches?
CCP makes U-Ditches from 10 to 360 cm wide. Sizes with drawings are 200 cm long, and special sizes can be made to the project design.

Which channel suits a road that trucks cross?
Usually a 52-tonne O-Gutter, or a U-Ditch with a vehicle-rated cover. The designer should set the class from the actual vehicle loads.

Does a Spoon Drain need a cover?
No. It is a shallow channel that vehicles drive over directly.
